But, as pointed out by Bowie et al, 1985 Tchobanoglous & Schroder, 1985 and Chapra, 1997, water quality models must also involve the balance of different materials, adequate hydraulic equations, chemical expressions, among other information, to conveniently describe the response of the physical systems to different perturbations. ![]() A number of models exists for the quantification of the oxygenation absorption by water bodies, generally expressed through the “reaeration coefficient”, K2. The major aspect considered for the water management involves the water quality changes in the streams, caused by both the natural and the anthropogenic inputs. ![]() Reaeration in rivers is a theme of numerous studies in the literature, some of which (like as Bowie et al., 1985) served as basis for procedures followed in the Amazon rivers and, particularly, for the present study. Reaeration has an important role in flowing waters, because it maintains the aerobic and facultative aquatic life, supplying the needed oxygen naturally from the atmosphere. ![]() The oxygen exchange between atmosphere and water streams is usually known as “reaeration” or “reoxygenation” when the physical absorption of oxygen by water bodies is considered.
